Whether a student is learning piano , violin , guitar , drums , or singing , counting beats correctly helps them play and sing in time. At NUVO Music School , we teach rhythm step-by-step so beginners can feel confident reading music and following the beat. What Is a Beat? A beat is the steady pulse of the music. Think of it like a heartbeat or the ticking of a clock. When we use a metronome , each click equals one beat . Most beginner music is in 4/4 time , which means: There are 4 beats in each measure and we usually count: 1 – 2 – 3 – 4 Note Values and How to Count Them Whole Note – 4 Beats A whole note lasts for four full beats.
