Beginner’s Guide to Rhythm: Whole, Half, Quarter Notes and Rests

 For Piano, Violin, Guitar, Drums & Voice Students in Surrey, White Rock, Langley and Delta BC

Understanding rhythm is one of the first and most important skills in music. Whether a student is learning piano, violin, guitar, drums, or singing, counting beats correctly helps them play and sing in time.

At NUVO Music School, we teach rhythm step-by-step so beginners can feel confident reading music and following the beat.

What Is a Beat?

A beat is the steady pulse of the music. Think of it like a heartbeat or the ticking of a clock. When we use a metronome, each click equals one beat.

Most beginner music is in 4/4 time, which means:
There are 4 beats in each measure and we usually count:

1 – 2 – 3 – 4

Music Notes by NUVO Music School

Note Values and How to Count Them

Whole Note – 4 Beats

A whole note lasts for four full beats.

Count:
1 – 2 – 3 – 4 (hold the sound the whole time)

Half Note – 2 Beats

A half note lasts for two beats.

Count:
1 – 2

Quarter Note – 1 Beat

A quarter note lasts for one beat.

Count:
1

Dotted Half Note – 3 Beats

A dot adds half of the note’s value.

Half note = 2 beats
Dot = +1 beat
Total = 3 beats

Count:
1 – 2 – 3

Rests: Learning When to Be Silent

Rests tell us when not to play, but they are counted the same way as notes.

  • Whole Rest = 4 beats of silence

  • Half Rest = 2 beats of silence

  • Quarter Rest = 1 beat of silence

Students learn that silence is just as important as sound in keeping good rhythm.
